Memorizing Scripture

Samantha at Virtuous Daughters posted a great entry about memorizing Scripture. (View Post Here) Virtuous Daughters is a new blog I’ve found, and it is great to read! Samantha has some great posts on there!!

Anyways, as I was saying, memorizing Scripture is an area I lack in as well, and I’m going to start working on memorizing the best I can. Samantha is working on Psalms 1, but since I’m not good at memorizing I’m going to start in Psalms 134.. It seems to be short enough to start with!!

Behold, bless ye the LORD, all ye servants of the LORD, which by night stand in the house of the LORD.
Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the LORD.
The LORD that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion.
Psalms 134

Since I can’t begin it tonight, I will start working on it tomorrow. In Samantha’s post, she challenges us to see how much we can memorize in a month, for me it will be from June 19th to July 19th. I challenge you to do the same. :)

Memorizing things is not easy for me, which is why I’ve chosen a short passage to begin with!!

Sisters, what are you going to have to stand on, if YOU’RE Bible is taken from YOU? Will you have already hid His word deep within your hearts, so even if they take the written word of God away from you, they can’t take what has already been written on your hearts? Will you still be able to still teach your children the Word of God because it is written on your hearts and you know it by heart?

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Psalms 119:11

  1. Don’t forget that with the memorization comes the action! That was what my first “long” sermon was on – there’s no point in memorizing scripture if you don’t do anything with it afterwards.

  2. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

I’m going to memorize it so I know it, so I won’t sin. Of course I will apply the verses to my life. :)

  3. Gotta love index cards! They’re a great asset to Scripture memorazation!
I think once I get to Texas I might invest in some KJV Bible on CD’s as well.
I learn my seeing and hearing best!

I hope your Scripture memorization goes well! Ask God to help you remember and to live out the Scriptures!

Have a wonderful weekend and Sabbath!

  4. I’ve never used index cards, but I know that singing scripture works really well too. We have this CD http://www.altarofpraise.com/cds/scripture_songs.htm and we listen to it all the time, in the house, while we’re in the truck, etc. :)

    Thanks for the comment, Dawn!!

  5. I just wanted to make you aware of a free resource that teaches people techniques for memorizing Scripture.

    http://stores.lulu.com/biblememorize

Just click on The ABC’s of Memorizing the Bible (The Basics) to download the ebook. It’s also designed to be an evangelistic tool to people that don’t necessarily believe in the Bible but want to improve their memories.

    I hope this helps!
