Prince is dead

Prince, our rough collie…

Prince had to be put down this morning, because of a broken (or dislocated) hip. He was laying in a highly unusual spot this morning when Dad left for work. His back end was under the explorer, and when Dad backed the car out, the front wheel went over his hip. I think it broke it.

But, he had never been laying there before, and it was pitch black there, so Daddy didn’t see him, so he had no way of knowing he was there. I know Daddy feels bad about what happened, but I know it was an accident.
Prince couldn’t move (except his front end), and we didn’t want him to suffer, so we had to put him down. The pain was getting so bad in his hip he was whining and trying to sit up to relieve it. He couldn’t stay up long though because his front legs couldn’t hold it.

We buried him at the top of the field. Prince has always been with us, ever since I can remember. We got him when I was a couple years old. He was the best farm dog we ever could’ve had, so gentle with all the animals, and yet a very good watchdog around the house.
Wherever we were outside, doing anything, he was always with us and following us.

Goodbye, dear Prince!

  4. mamajuliana ~ Thank you! :) I’m glad you like my blog.

Kira ~ It was terrible, I think that was the worst thing that’s ever had to happen around here. Thank you for commenting. :)

V.R.B ~ Yes, I do miss him. But I think my brother misses him more. Levi spent much more time with him than I, and it was very hard on him too.. probably harder on him than it was on me.

  5. Oh how sad for your family. I’m sorry Lacy. *hugs*

  7. akhomeschoolfun ~ Thank you very much!

Dawn ~ Thank you. This is the first dog we’ve ever had to put down. My old dog, Woofie, died of a heartworms and a heart attack, but at least we didn’t have to put him down.

It was very hard, because Prince was the best dog we’d ever had.

I appreciate all the kind comments! Thank you all very much!

  8. Lacy, so sorry to read about the loss of Prince and Oddball. I have been so busy I haven’t read any blogs in a while, but when I woke up this morning I was thinking about that and decided to see what was going on in your world. Those have to be tough times, losing animals you care about. You must be glad to have taken so many nice pictures. I’ll have to make some more time to catch up with the rest of what’s going on.

Our guinea keets are rapidly growing and we have been letting them out of the coop (still supervised) a couple times a day. The silkie chickens are getting fluffier and fluffier–they are little fuzzballs, yet they try to look so serious. Hilarious. The Accidental Pheasant is still with us and seems to believe it is a guinea. And, out of 6 Pekin duck eggs we incubated, only one hatched. Cutest thing EVER, still a baby. We put 2 of the chickens in the brooder with him so he’d have someone–otherwise he just had me, and you could see he was imprinting on me and thought he was human, which I guess leads to unhappy times later in life. Makes us want to raise more ducks though. We take him out to visit with the rest and the guineas run, terrified, from the little yellow fuzzy guy! Amazing how much smarter he is than the chickens, too.

Take care, and I hope you are still having a good summer despite the difficult times.

  9. Erika,

It’s good to hear from you again! Yes, it was hard to lose both of them, but at least they are not suffering anymore. I know Prince had to be in a lot of pain from his front broken leg, and often his back legs would go to sleep and he would have trouble getting up.

I’m glad to hear your chicks & keets are growing! Our keets are growing too, and Tiny is still making it, though he is still smaller and much slower than the rest of them. But they are starting to chirp quite loudly now! :-)

Little Ducks are cute, I know. I remember when we had our little ones, and they are surprisingly smart. One we had at one time, we taught to know her name. :)

  10. We had some ducklings one spring in the house because it was too cold outside still for them. We rented a movie but it turned out it was a very bad movie and we turned it off. Immediately, the little ducks started chirping to each other. We turned it back on and the quieted down and we think they were watching it! When we stopped it or it was at a slow spot, they started chirping again. It turned into a most amusing evening watching the ducklings watch the movie.
